just a quick update- I received the short rig sail. Decent quality, looks pretty good. There is a full width batten at the top, which is supposed to help reduce death roll issues. I had to hack a "plug" for the top of the mid section mast, I used thick, sticky window flashing tape. I will switch this out for a real plug from Great Lakes when they have them back in stock.
I haven't had a chance to sail it yet but will post again when I do. Jeff

If Steve at Great Lakes has a significant delay in having those available, someone may be able to help with other Ideas - be careful with possibly ripping the top of that sail with a hard edge...

People have made up their own plug using PVC plumbing pipe. I think it was 1/2 inch piece of pipe with a plug on it. Measure it to see which size works.

thanks Rob and Chris,
I did look at some fittings the other night at home depot. It seems that's a good way to go but I didn't put together the right combination yet. I realized I don't want to lose the plug down into the mast, so I have to find a fitting with a coupling a little wider than the top of the mast. I have to fool around with that some more I guess. So far, I closed off the top with some very thick, very sticky window to sheathing flashing tape, but that is temporary...

What about something like this? www.amazon.com/Prescott-Plastics-Pack-Pl...d=1596639850&sr=8-12

I just had to get a bunch of (square and rectangular) plugs for my trailer and I got it from this company. I'm not sure of the mast section size, but if they have the right one, it seems like it would work.

They also have vinyl caps that might work- I just got one for my bowsprit on the Swift. They might cause problems sliding the sail on though since they're more grippy than plastic and would slip over the outside of the mast.
